ITWorld Canada: Chinese domain names to flood Internet
By: Owen Fletcher - IDG News Service (Beijing Bureau)(NA) (26 Aug 2009)
China expects domain names that end in Chinese characters to be mainstream in two years. The government recently deployed Internet domain names written in Chinese
China has pushed ahead with deploying Internet domain names written in Chinese as it urges action to standardize their use globally.
More than 300 million people in China now use the Internet, which puts it on pace to have the largest number of Internet users in the world this year.
Earlier statistics released by industry groups show an increase in global disputes over Web domain names.
China has solved most of the technical problems raised by Chinese-language domain names and is in the process of deploying them, said Zhang Jian, director of the international business department at the country's domain registration agency, the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), in an interview Wednesday.
Within two years, the agency expects all mainstream Web sites in the country will have domain names that end in the two Chinese characters for "China," rather than the .cn top-level domain. It also expects those domain names to become the most widely visited by Chinese Internet users.

Ecommerce Journal: Internet and e-commerce in Austria
August 19, 2009 - 12:00pm | author: kara deniz
Today, we are to talk about one of the Central European countries Austria, bordering Germany and the Czech Republic to the north, Slovakia and Hungary to the east, Slovenia and Italy to the south, and Switzerland and Liechtenstein to the west. The country’s capital, Vienna, is one of the most wonderful cities in the world. The country has developed a high standard of living, and in 2008 was ranked 14th in the world for its Human Development Index. Austria has been a member of the United Nations since 1955, joined the EU in 1995, and is a founder of the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development). Austria also signed the Schengen Agreement in 1995, and adopted the European currency in 1999. We are to consider the Internet and e-commerce infrastructure in Austria to find what stage of development the country is currently on.
As for the broadband market, Internet access is typically represented by DSL and cable, with DSL sector, which rapidly overtook cable as the preferred access method, dominating on the market. There are 37 internet service providers in Austria. The leading cable ISP is UPC Austria, offering cable access under the Chello brand and also DSL access as Inode. The other main cable ISPs are Tele2, and Kabelsignal offering cable services in the area south of Vienna.

Services For The . Net: Dot NU Web Name TLD What A Price For A Countrywide Identity?
By Services For The . Net | Aug 16, 2009
The tiny Polynesian island nation of Niue is beginning to think it’s been had. Frankly, it’s clear they didn’t do their research before they did their deal.
Ironically, it seems the buyer hadn’t really done his, either. Anyone who has been inundated by advertisements for ‘global domains’ can easily understand that it’s a escalating business. The specter of purchasing a domain at a much better price than the more common ‘dot com’ or ‘dot net’ or ‘dot org’ is most attractive to most would-be entrepeneurs on restricted budgets. This niche’s market leader is most likely Global Domains International (GDI), which has no doubt put Western Samoa on the mental map of many a cybernaut. The key element in that deal is that the Western Samoan government granted the rights to GDI in return for a royalty for every domain sold.
Niue’s name is derived from the local language’s phrase for, “Look, a coconut!” It seems they should have used theirs more thoroughly before signing a domain deal with Bill Semich in 1998.
An American businessman whose former station was editor for a computer magazine, Semich recognized the potential value in the marketability of rare domains. Apparently finding the ‘nu’ extension an eye-catching letter arrangement, he signed a contract with the Niue government that gave him the exclusive rights to it.
It wasn’t a one-way deal. Semich assured free wireless access for all 2000 of Niue’s populace and he delivered, finishing the system of an island-wide set-up of translator towers in 2003. The country’s leaders surely felt they had provided their population with a service for the new century which would positively ensconce their place in island history.

Choosing a relevant domain name can provide a form of brand which can be recognised instantly and help the website to prosper. Although there are several styles of top level domains such as the .com and .co.uk extensions, one which has become popular within the music and dj market is the domain extension .dj. With this in mind a leading domain name registration website offers a unique dj domain offering to disc jockeys which is proving to be very popular, the website is www.dj-domains.dj
This innovative website offers the ability to secure a dj domain name. This means that the domain name chosen will have the ending .dj instead of .com or .co.uk. Global by Design: The Branding of Country Codes: A list of “countryless” ccTLDs
Posted on August 16th, 2009 by John Yunker
A country code top-level-domains (ccTLD) has traditionally been used to signify a country-specific web site or resource, or simply to tell users where a given organization is located. For example, Russia’s leading search engine, Yandex, is hosted at www.yandex.ru and The Holy See hosts its site at www.vatican.va (.va = Vatican City).
Then along came the the marketing of .TV.
This ccTLD, owned by the island nation of Tuvalu, was licensed and packaged as the ultimate domain for any media property. And though the domain hasn’t exactly become as popular as .COM, a precedent had been set — ccTLDs weren’t just for country-specific properties anymore.
Then along came Delicio.us, a company that cleverly embedded the United States ccTLD into its brand name.

Ecommerce Journal: Internet and e-commerce industry in Hong Kong
August 3, 2009 - 12:00pm | author: Petrony
The name of the country we are to talk about today is translated to English as "fragrant harbour". This romantic name originally described a small inlet (Little Hong Kong today) between the island of Ap Lei Chau and the south side of the island which later became known as Hong Kong. Officially the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is a largely self-governing territory of the People's Republic of China, facing Guangdong to the north and the South China Sea to the east, west and south. Today, Hong Kong is a global metropolitan and international financial centre, with a highly developed capitalist economy. We are to find what stage of ICT progress and e-commerce development the country is currently at.
Internet market in Hong Kong has been growing impetuously over the last several years. In the beginning of 2001, Hong Kong led the world broadband market, having the highest in the world growth rate for household broadband penetration. The boom was reflected by almost 5 million subscribers by 2005, or to be exact 4,878,713, that made up over 70% of the population that doubled the digits of 2000 data with 2,283,000 people connected, or 34% (internetworldstats.com). Nevertheless, the take up of broadband services got off to a slow start as only at the beginning there any serious embracing of the services offerings took place. As for the current data, year 2008 revealed almost the same with 2005 penetration rate.
As for the Internet Service Providers, the great number of them appeared in early 2000s as a big jump in issuing licenses was followed in 2000. So, by the year 2005 about 188 ISPs were accounted.

KyleWilliams.com: .us ccTLD Domain Research
I have been curious how well the .us ccTLD has been growing, so I decided to do some research of my own. For most domains, it is easy to go to Google, type site:.com, and see approximately how many pages Google has indexed on the .com gTLD. However, this isn’t as simple with .us. The problem is, there are millions of pages indexed for each of the official state.us domains, and I did not want this data included in the end result. So I decided to start archiving my own data, by doing manual site: searches for each state, and subtracting that data from the total number of .us pages. This includes removing data from US territories, and the fed.us pages.

DomainPulse.com: .DE Regains Number One ccTLD Ranking From .CN
August 16th, 2009 by David Goldstein
With .CN (China)’s official statistics for domain name registrations on a downward spiral, according to figures provided by CNNIC, .DE (Germany) has regained its position as the ccTLD (country code Top Level Domain) registry with the most registrations.
Registrations for .CN have declined from an end-of-month peak of 14,082,553 in February 2009 to 12,545,589, a decline of approximately 1.5 million, as of the end of July. This appears to be a correction following a promotion where .CN domain names could be registered for one yuan for the twelve month period to December 31, 2008. With registrations coming up for renewal, many registrants may have decided not to renew their domain names.

Ecommerce Journal: Internet and e-commerce industry in Venezuela
August 17, 2009 - 12:00pm | author: kara deniz
Venezuela is a tropical country on the northern coast of South America, that represents a continental mainland with numerous islands located off its coastline in the Caribbean Sea. Venezuela is considered to be one of the most urbanized countries in Latin America; the majority of Venezuelans live in the cities of the north, especially in the capital Caracas which is also one of the largest cities along with Maracaibo, Valencia, Maracay, Barquisimeto and Ciudad Guayana. Today we are to find what the country’s broadband market and e-commerce infrastructure like.
As for the Internet penetration in Venezuela, it’s considerably lower than average for Latin America. Thus, according to the worldstats.com data related to the second quarter of 2008 Venezuela accounted 5,900,000 Internet subscribers occupying the sixth position far behind Brazil with 50,000,000 users taking the first place, Argentina with 16,000,000 and Colombia with 13,700,000, taking second and third places, respectively. Fourth and fifth place are taken by Peru and Chile, having the penetration levels that are slightly higher than Venezuela’s one.
As for the Internet usage growth, for the period of 2000-20008 it made up 607.7%, but anyway, it’s still lower than in other developed countries and made up just 25,5 % with 6,723,616 subscribers. Thus, for example, in 2000 it was just 950,000 users or only 4.1% of the population; by 2005 their number grew to 3,040,000, or 12.2 %.

Many of these sites are based in China but use co.uk as part of their domain name, fooling shoppers into thinking the company is UK-based.

Domain.com: What is a Top-Level Domain, Anyway?
July 31, 2009
You may have heard of the term top-level domain, often referred to as TLD, when talking about domain registration. The top-level domain is the .com or other extension that follows your individual domain. They fall into two categories – generic TLDs and country-specific TLDs. Currently there are just over 20 generic top-level domains (the most notable being .com, .net, .org, .gov, .edu, .biz) plus top-level domains for most countries.
What’s in a Domain Name?
A domain is broken into several parts, but it can be simplified to a great degree. Historically when talking about a website, you’d specify www.domain.com when telling someone your web address. However, with most web browsers are now improved to the point where if you simply type “domain.com” the website will resolve without a problem. Everything to the left of the TLD in a domain name is technically a subdomain. The “domain” in www.domain.com is a subdomain of the .com TLD, and the “www” is a subdomain of domain.com.
The domain name system in general can be a little confusing, but it’s much better than having to type in the IP address that the domain name represents. You’d end up typing 216.34.94.184 into your address bar to get to Domain.com without the domain name system. If you’re curious about more domain name system details, the Wikipedia page is a good place to start.
